Australian Migration Occupations in Demand List (Skilled Occupations List)

Australian Migration Occupations in Demand List (Skilled Occupations List)

The Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL) is a collection of job titles that have been selected by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations as being very high in demand in Australia.

This approach has since been phased out and replaced by the similar Australian Skill Occupation List, which can be found here. While engineers and those in the medical field take up much of the list, there are many different kinds of occupations desired. These include (but are not limited to) plumbers, locksmiths and carpenters. Check to see if your occupation is on the list.

The list is based on advice from the Australian Workforce Productivity Agency and reflects the country's commitment to have a diverse amount of necessary skills brought in.

SkillSelect: Australia's New Approach To Immigration

SkillSelect is a major change to how the Australian migration system operates. It is expected to dramatically lower the time taken to process visas by carefully managing who can apply and when. It can also respond to the regional needs inside of Australia for certain occupations, allowing a more fluid and dynamic response to Australia's unique immigration needs.

The system is based online and works by allowing prospective immigrants to be considered for a skilled visa by submitting an Expression of Interest. These can then be sorted through and nominated for a visa by Australian employers. In some cases, the prospective immigrant will be invited by the Australian government itself to apply for a visa.

SkillSelect Visas

There are many different visas you might qualify for. These include:

Most applicants will fall into the first few categories concerning skilled occupations, but if you are not sure which category you might fall into, the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection offers a useful tool called the Visa Wizard that can help you determine the correct choice after you answer a few questions.

The very first option, Skilled Independent Visa, is the most common. It is for workers who are not sponsored by an employer, state, or family member. These applications are by invitation only. To receive an invitation, you must first:

  • Submit an Expression of Interest

  • Have an occupation on the skilled occupation list

  • Be less than 50 years of age

  • Be able to score at least 60 on the points test
